Primary prevention involves a shift from risk reduction (how to handle a
dangerous situation) to the development of a healthy community.

Culture is an informal system of beliefs and ideals. Racism, sexism, homophobia
and other attitudes often condone sexual violence are prevalent in our cultural
behaviors. Primary prevention connects culture and behaviors to consequences
and focuses on the elimination of sexual violence before it manifests itself.

Some examples of needed change:
  • Personal development of strategies to handle everyday stresses in a
    healthy way
  • Bystander attitudes and community accountability
  • Workplace policies that promote equality and demands respect for all

RCVCC is providing violence prevention education to groups of parents and
children.  Multiple sessions address issues including
  • Self-understanding
  • Respectfulness
  • Self-control
  • Refusal skills
  • Conflict resolution
  • Personal safety.

Volunteers who are interested in working with this new initiative should contact
RCVCC for more information.
